The shortlisted finalists for the Oxfringe/Bob Harris Music Competition were: Dead Jerichos, Gunning for Tamar, and Message to Bears.

Special recognition for originality and excellence went to these three runners up for the final: Space Heroes of the People, Adam Barnes, The Black Hats.

Bob Harris kindly agreed to share his birthday weekend with Oxfringe, to participate on the finals judging panel along with Tim Bearder and Ronan Munro, editor of Nightshift and to announce the winner.

Our thanks go to Steve Larkin, for his dynamic compering of the event and to Autumn Neagle of Coo Promotions who coordinated the entries and organised many of the music competition gigs. Also thanks to The Epstein who rounded the evening off with a stunning, high quality performance.

Dead Jerichos were the overall winners. Dead Jerichos are a young energy-driven three piece post punk / new wave band from Abingdon, Oxfordshire, taking musical inspiration from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Hurtling to the top of the pile they are stirring up quite a sensation reminiscent of early Supergrass days! Despite having to rush off and play another gig that night after their Oxfringe finale performance last Sunday at the Bullingdon Arms, they charmed and wowed judges and audience alike with their break-neck performance. Whispering’ Bob Harris announced them as winners and applauded the rock’n roll nature of their rapid exit. Receiving the good news later that evening they texted “We didn’t even play that well! We’re Buzzing! Ha!” Catch them if you can! Check them out here: http://www.myspace.com/deadjerichos

Bob Harris said on his radio show the next day: “I was on stage last night, at this festival in Oxford called Oxfringe… I was announcing the winner, and a really good band called Dead Jerichos, they won, they were excellent… there were 60 odd bands but they were the winners”

Eleven intrepid and impressive performers fought valiantly against each other at the first of our Oxfringe Hobgoblin Comedy Award Gong Shows, to a packed but very good humoured crowd at the Duke’s Cut, 1 Park End Street. All performers displayed a great array of talent and skilled cut-and-thrust with their audience, showing pluck and confidence.

As many as four contestants managed to stay the 7 minute course, with others commendably not far behind. With help from delighted audience applause, the finalists were ranked as follows:

Winner: Matt Richardson – buoyed up with confidence on his home turf!

1st Runner up: Tony Coward

2nd Runner up: Alex Clissold-Jones

3rd Runner up: Barbaros Denlisoz

Well done to all eleven for providing a great evening’s entertainment, in good spirit. Hats off to Iszi Lawrence whose adept skills as a raconteur ensured good humour and fast pacing throughout the evening. She can be seen in her own stand-up show on Friday 2 April at Copa Upstairs at 10 pm.

Many thanks also to landlord James Knox for hosting the event and not forgetting our sponsor Chris Keating of Hobgoblin for providing some great prizes for the winners!

Update: Another great time was had by all at our second Hobgoblin Comedy Awards Gong Show on Friday 9 April at the Duke’s Cut. The winners were:

1st Chris Coxen

2nd Richard Fox

3rd Hootie

with special commendations for Luke Graves and James Mason who both did brilliant sets.

Latest news: Oxfringe is proud and excited to announce that Oxfordshire’s own “Whispering” Bob Harris has agreed to be our Music Patron. Renowned music presenter and broadcaster of the legendary Whistle Test TV shows, Bob currently presents BBC Radio 2’s The Bob Harris Show (Saturday 11 pm) and Bob Harris Country (Thursday 7 pm). Often described as the ‘John Peel of country music’, few people have broken as many bands into the mainstream.

“My work is inspired by new music and it is wonderful to be involved with Oxfringe, ” was Bob’s enthusiastic comment. ” New music is the lifeblood of my industry and I can’t wait to get further involved with the fantastic energy of the Oxfordshire independent music community, promoting and supporting our exciting local acts.”

Bob will be involved in Oxfringe in various ways over the coming months – watch this space for more details.
